How to Illustrate a Colorful Hippie Peace Van - VW Camper Van

This tutorial is for all you groovy, peace-loving people, and a tribute for those good old times. Quickly learn how to create a stylized hippie van using some simple illustration techniques and Illustrator’s new drawing modes. Let’s get started with creating this iconic, retro peace van.

Final Product

Step 1

Open up a new document and select the Rounded Rectangle Tool. Draw a rectangle and adjust the corners radius using arrow keys.

Press “+” to select the Add Anchor Point Tool and add an anchor point on the right edge of the rectangle. Press “A” to select the Direct Selecting Tool and move this anchor point to the right (about 10 pixels depending on you rectangle size) using arrow keys.

Press now “Shift + C” to select the Convert Anchor Point Tool, click on the newly created anchor point and pull down a little to make the back of the van rounded.

Now, add another anchor point on the front edge of the bus just like you did with the right one. Select it and those two bottom left anchor points and move them to the left.

Add another anchor point on the top left corner and then move it to the right and a little up to achieve a path as you see in the image.

Step 2

The most basic shape of the van is ready, now we need to edit the bottom of the van so we can place some wheels later. Select the Ellipse Tool (L) and draw a circle intersecting the body of the van.

Select both of these paths and press the Minus Front button in the Pathfinder panel to cut that circle from the body.

Repeat this step one again but use a rounded rectangle instead.

Step 3

Select the body path, set “none” for stroke color and fill it with a vertical (-90 degrees) gradient from #F179AB to #EE3876, enter a 70% value.

Select the Pen Tool (P) and draw a path as you see below.

Press “Ctrl + [” to move in under the body path.

Step 4

To travel around the world, our bus need some wheels, so let’s draw them. Select the Ellipse Tool (L) and draw a big circle that fits into the space that we reserved for it. Also make it no stroke and fill with a radial gradient from 70% (Location 46%) to 90%gray. That’s going to be our tire.

With your tire selected go to Object > Path > Offset Path and create a smaller circle inside.

Fill it with 90% gray and give it a 6 pixels Gaussian Blur.

Repeat the Offset Path command once again to create an even smaller circle. Fill it with a radial gradient from white to 10% gray to #A3DCE8. Adjust the size and position of the gradient.

Our wheel is ready! Select it, press “Ctrl + G” to group those three circles together and drag a copy of the wheel. Press “Ctrl + [” twice to move the wheel under the body sub layer.

Step 5

Zoom in and draw a path as you see in the image. That’s going to be the support for the head light. Fill it with linear gradient from #A3DCE8 to 10% gray to #A3DCE8.

Select Ellipse Tool again and draw a red ellipse. Intersecting newly drawn path. Then press “Ctrl + Shift + [” to send it back.

Use Rounded Rectangle Tool to create the bumper. Fill it with the same gradient as the head light support.

Make a copy of the bumper path, rotate it 90 degrees, make it smaller and more narrow then place it on the back fender.

Use Rounded Rectangle Tool once again to create tail lights.

The same way draw the head indicator light.

Step 6

It’s time to give some colors to the van. Here is where Illustrator’s CS5 new drawing mode comes handy. Instead of thinking about Clipping masks or use Pathfinder commands we’ll just select the body path and press “Shift + D” twice to switch to “Draw Inside” mode. Now grab your Pen Tool and start drawing.

Try do draw a couple of random lines of various thickness intersecting the bus.

Select them, right-click on them and select Make Compound Path. Since these two path are now part of one single Compound Path we can apply a gradient across both of them. Fill them with a vertical gradient from #AED25E to #9EC63B.

Select these lines and give them a thick yellow stroke.Somewhere on your artboard draw a simple flower and a heart. Place them and a copule of smaller copies on the bus. You may also change their colors.

Step 7

Use Rectangle Tool (M) to draw four windows on the van.

With your windows paths selected go to Effect > Stylize > Rounded Corners and enter a suitable value for the Radius.

Now go to Object > Path > Offset Path and enter a very small value for the Offset to create a slightly visible stroke around the windows. Fill it with a dark pink (#EE3876).

Give this stroke a blur (select it and go to Effect > Blur > Gaussian Blur).

Select the windows and fill them with a gradient from #3F84C5 to #662D91.

Step 8

Use Pen Tool to create 1 pt #EE3876 outlines for doors.

Draw a small ellipse on the front door and fill it with a dark pink, then grab your Pen Tool and draw a white handle.

Copy both of these paths and place another handle on the second door.

Create a rounded rectangle filled with #9E1F63.

Press “C” to select the Scissors Tool and cut this rectangle horizontally. Delete then a half.

Place four copies of the resulting path on the back fender of the van.

Create three ellipses filled with a radial gradient from 80% 40% gray (opacity set to 0%) to give the bus a shadow.

Final Result

Our van is ready to hit the roads!

How To Create a Detailed Vector Sugar Skull Illustration

Follow this Illustrator design tutorial to create a super detailed sugar skull illustration made from lots of sweet vector elements. We’ll use a mix of basic and advanced Illustrator tools to build various decorative objects to slowly build up the features until we have an awesome looking skull design that pays homage to the Mexican Dia de los Muertos tradition. Sugar skull originated as part of the festivities of the Mexican Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) holiday. The traditional sugar skull is a sweet treat that’s decorated with lots of bright and colourful designs, which makes it a popular source of inspiration for designers and illustrators. The sugar skull theme is also hugely popular as tattoo art, and makes an equally trendy apparel design. A quick search online brings up plenty of resources to feed your imagination and generate ideas for your own skull design.

Let’s get started with out own vector sugar skull Illustration. Open up Adobe Illustrator and draw an oval onto the artboard. Use the Direct Selection tool to drag the upper most point downwards (hold Shift) to flatten out the top curve.

Use the Pen tool to complete the outline of a skull by drawing a protruding cheek and jaw line. Finish the lower jaw along the centre line of the skull. Copy (CMD+C), and Paste in Front (CMD+F), then go to Object > Transform > Reflect to flip the duplicate over.

Align the duplicate to the opposite side of the skull, then merge all the objects together using the Pathfinder tool.

Zoom in and tweak the outline where the two halves are joined. Removing stray points with the Pen tool will clean up the outline and remove unwanted kinks.

With the outline selected, go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Offset the path by 3mm, then right click and Ungroup the two lines.

Add a thick 6pt stroke to the inner outline and a 2pt stroke to the outer outline. Align both strokes to the outside of the path using the Stroke palette.

Use the Pen tool to draw a flowing line from the inner outline. Hold Shift while dragging the anchor points to produce accurate angles.

Duplicate these lines and go to Object > Transform > Reflect to position them on the opposite side.

Draw a circle to represent the basic shape of an eye. Go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Zig Zag to edit the outline of the circle.

Change the settings to Smooth, then adjust the sliders to create a flowing wavy outline around the circle.

To confirm the appearance of the shape, go to Object > Expand Appearance. This will make the Zig Zag transformation permanent and allow the object to be used with the next step.

With the object selected, go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Enter 3mm in the options.

Repeat the process of adding an offset path a few more times, then adjust the fill and stroke of each item to produce alternating outlines. Use different stroke weights to add more detail.

Add another circle to the centre of the wavy outlines. This time go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Pucker & Bloat. Drag the slider around 10% towards the Pucker side of the bar.

Use the Align palette to centre up the items. Shift-click both the Pucker shape and the wavy outline, then click the wavy outline once more to set this as the key object.

Continue adding more circles using various sized stroke and alternating colours. A series of dots can be created using the Stroke palette – Check the Dashed Line option, then adjust the dash to 0 and gap to 8-10pt. Make sure the Round Cap and Round Join options are set, then adjust the size of the dot by increasing the stroke weight.

Draw a small white circle, then drag the lower most point downwards (hold Shift). Copy (CMD+C) and paste (CMD+F) this shape, rotate it by 180 degrees then move the duplicate vertically, leaving a small gap between the two objects.

Copy both items, paste, then rotate these duplicates by 90 degrees. Continue adding more shapes at 45 degree angles.

Paste another duplicate of the shapes, then go to Object > Transform > Rotate. Enter 22.5 (45 divided by 2 = 22.5) then finish off the pattern until all the elements are evenly spaced.

Two more small circles in the centre of the eye finishes off the detailed pattern nicely. Make sure everything is aligned using the Align palette. Group all these objects together (CMD+G).

Make a copy of the eye and move it to the opposite side. Group both eyes together then align them with the main skull outline. Remember to select the skull outline as the key object by giving it an extra click. This will ensure the eyes move into place, not the outline.

Elsewhere on the artboard draw an oval. Drag the lower most point upwards until the bottom edge is almost flat.

Duplicate this shape and butt it up to the previous. Scale each duplicate down by 90% (Object > Transform > Scale) and vertically align them all to the bottom.

Select all the objects and go to Object > Envelope Distort > Make with Warp. Choose an Arc with a bend of around -16 degrees. Adjust the distortion to keep the outlines of the teeth running vertically.

Go to Object > Expand and select just the Object checkbox to make the effect permanent then make a copy. Add another Envelope Distort to the lower set, but this time bend them so they run parallel to the upper teeth. Expand the second set too.

Make duplicates of the two sets of teeth, then merge these duplicates together with the Pathfinder palette. This merged version can be used to add a thick outlining stroke and an offset path.

Send the thick outline and offset path items below the primary teeth shapes by repeatedly pressing the shortcut CMD+[. Group all the items together.

So far we have the eyes and mouth in place on the skull. Use similar techniques to create a nose. Begin with a basic shape, then add offset paths with alternating fills and strokes to build up the layers of detail.

Let's build some pretty elements to decorate the skull. Draw a circle over the upper skull area, add a Zig Zag transformation, Expand Appearance then add a 3mm offset path. Alter the stroke weights and align them to the outside.

Copy the series of radial teardrop shapes from the eye graphic and scale them up for use in this decorative element. Align them so they overlap the white outline, creating a cool intersecting effect.

Continue adding circles and differently shaped elements to build up the detail. Duplicating items that have been used elsewhere speed up the process.

Once the decorative shape is complete group the items together. Make a duplicate of the skull outline (CMD+C - CMD+F). Send this item to the top of the stack (CMD+Shift+]), then use it as a clipping mask to trim out the excess from the decorative element.

Make a copy of the decorative element, then flip it using the Reflect transform option to position it on the opposite side.

Draw a couple of circles that flow across the upper skull area. Give these circles a dotted stroke. Instead of using a Clipping Mask, simple shapes like these can be clipped using the Scissors tool. Make intersections where the paths meet the skull outline then delete out the excess.

Make copies of the detail lines at the edge of the skull and rotate each one to form a series of shading lines.

A teardrop shape can be quickly made by dragging the lower most point of a circle vertically using the Direct Selection tool. Convert the anchor point to remove the bezier handles and therefore creating a sharp point.

Variations of the teardrop can be made using the Envelope Distort tool. Add a Vertical Bend of 50%.

Don’t forget to permanently fix the shape by going to Object > Expand and selecting just the Object checkbox.

Scale and position these teardrop shapes across the skull to fill out the white space and provide extra decoration. Make sure each object is also replicated on the opposite side to make the skull perfectly symmetrical.

Objects as simple as a circle can be used to fill out other areas. Align little circles around the mouth to produce another pattern.

As well as using Clipping Masks and trimming shapes with the Scissors tool, shapes can be clipped to size with the Pathfinder Intersect option. Use a copy of the skull outline to clip out the excess from objects that extend beyond the edge of the design.

Continue adding tiny vector shapes and elements to completely fill out the skull until you’re happy with its appearance, or until you lose your sanity. The final sugar skull is packed with detail and ready for combining with other elements as a poster or setting up as a cool t-shirt print.

Illustrator tutorial - Grunge sunburst effect

As promised before, today I’ll show you how to draw the sunburst shape and apply the grunge effect on it as well. Then, we will learn on how to save our sunburst shape to symbol so that you’ll never need to create them over and over again. And finally, I will show you a little tricks how to apply the grunge effect on text. Anyhow, here we go.
Software: Adobe Illustrator CS
Step 1
Create a New Document with 500px x 500px setting. Select RGB Color for Color Mode.
Go to View > Snap to Grid (Shift + Command/Ctrl + ").
Step 2
Select the Rectangle Tool or press M and click once anywhere on the artboard. You’ll see a popup window. Enter Width: 400px, Height: 400px. Fill it with a white color and a black stroke color.
Align our rectangle to the center of our artboard using the Align palette (Shift + F7). Make sure you select the Align to Artboard in order to make it work.

Go to the Layers palette (F7) and lock Layer 1. Create new layer.

Step 3
Repeat Step 2 to draw another rectangle. Enter Width: 40px and Height: 400px. Also, align it to the center. And this time just apply a black stroke color on it without a fill color.

Step 4
Go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Free Distort…What we're trying to do right here is to switch the position of our bottom-left point and the bottom-right point. To do this, click and drag the bottom-right point to the bottom-left point. After that click and drag the bottom-left point to the bottom-right point. You’ll have something like this:-

Click OK. Then go to Object > Expand Appearance.
Step 5
Double click the Rotate Tool. Enter Angle: -20 and click Copy.

Press Command/Ctrl + D seven times. You should have a similar shape like below:-

Step 6
Ok, now we would like make it really look like a sunburst. Grab your Direct Selection Tool or just press A. Select a single point of our shape. Then, click and drag the point until it "snapped" on our big rectangle line.

Do the same to the other points until you get something similar like below:-

Step 7
Ok, now, select all of our shape and fill it with Orange color, #FF9900 with no stroke color.

Drag this sunburst shape to the Symbol palette (Shift+F11). Click the circle-triangle button and Save Symbol Library. Just save it as orangesunburst.ai.

Wow! Right now you already have a vector sunburst shape and guess what, you’ll never need to recreate them. To use it, just Open Symbol Library, locate the orangesunburst symbol file. Drag the symbol to your artboard. And of course, you can change the color, resize them to make it bigger or even smaller.
Continue to next step to give this sunburst a grunge effect.
Note: Just delete the other symbols that you don’t use. Don’t worry about it.;)
Step 8
Using the Line Segment Tool (/), draw 3 lines across our sunburst and set Weight: 3px on Stroke palette (F10). Apply black color on it and without fill color. See image below:-

Select all our 3 lines by using Shift key. Open the Brushes palette (F5). Then click the small triangle button on the right side > Open Brush Library > Artistic_ChalkCharcoalPencil. Click on the brush that called Chalk (the first one, on top) to apply the brush effect.

Step 9
While all the lines was still on selected, go to Object > Expand Appearance.

Then, select all shapes including our sunburst. Go to Pathfinder palette (Shift + F9) and click Merge.

After that, go to Object > Expand and just click OK. Ungroup them. Object > Ungroup (Command/Ctrl + Shift + G). You might repeat this step (ungroup) 2 or 3 times until it cannot be ungroup anymore.
Step 10
Click anywhere on the artboard to deselect all shapes. Then, select some part of the black shape.

Go to Select > Same > Fill Color. Press Delete key.

Congratulation! Now you’ve created the grunge sunburst. Repeat Step 7 to save this shape as your symbol.
Step 11
Now we gonna apply this grunge effect on text. Lock Layer 2. Create new layer.
Go to the Type Tool (T) and type anything on the artboard. Press Command/Ctrl + T to bring out the Character palette. I used Verdana, Bold, 60pt. Fill it with green color, #1E7D27 with no stroke.
Right click the text > Create Outlines.
Repeat Step 8, 9 and 10. In step 8, just draw one line instead of three. And make sure the line and the text has a different color.
This is what I get:

Step 12
Last, but not least. Using the Rectangle Tool (M), draw another rectangle for our text background. Apply a black color for both fill and stroke color. Go to the Brushes palette (F5) once again and apply the Chalk Scribble brush on the default Brushes palette. Right click the rectangle > Arrange > Send to Back or just press Command/Ctrl + Shift + [.
Be creative. Rotate our text or play around using the other colors, gradient and so on. Besides, you also can add another text, shapes or anything that suits your design.
And..umm..one more thing. Remember our Layer 1? Unlock that layer and fill it with red color, #970F00 (or any color) with no stroke color. Done.

Illustrator Tutorial: Surprise Gift Box

There are times when you will need to do gift box and effects for special occasions. This tutorial will give you an idea how this can be done using brushes and some other techniques. I will not be going into details how each step is done but I will illustrate on some of the techniques used to create this illustration.

1. Breakdown of Layers

The illustration consists of 6 different layers. We will look at how each layer is done.

2. Background Layer

The is the background mesh of the illustration. First we create a blue square and we start adding points using the Gradient Mesh Tool and we tweak it to the the shape below. You can see that I have set the bottom points to a darker blue and the middle point to white. If you have difficulty creating this gradient mesh, take a look at my Gradient Mesh tutorial.

3. Gift Box

I will not be going into detail how this box is done. It is pretty simple. All you need is the Pen Tool. A tip for beginner is to turn on the Grid (View>Show Grid) and Enable Snapping(View>Enable Snap to Grid). With the grid on, you can precisely snap each points to the grid so that each intersecting shape will line up perfectly.

4. Line Patterns

For the line patterns on the gift box, you will find that there are actually some perspective. We can easily achive the effect by using the Blend Tool. Below are the steps on creating it…

First we create a long rectangle and place it at the start point(left side). Next, we duplicate the rectangle and rotate it slightly and we place it at the end point(right side).

Select the Blend Tool. Click on the left rectangle stripe and hold Alt/Option and click on the right rectangle stripe. If you do it correctly, it would pop up the Blend Options. Select Specified Steps for Spacing and enter a value of 7.

This is what it will look like after we applied the blend correctly. Next, we need to expand the blend. Go Object>Expand to expand it into individual shapes.

Finally, we need to trim off the exceeding shape. Copy the rectange face on the gift box underneath the stripes. Press Ctrl/Command+F to paste it in front. Select both the pasted shape and stripes. Open up Pathfinder and hold Alt/Option and select Intersect Shape to trim away the protruding areas. After that, we apply a gradient to the shape to achieve the effect I have done for my stripes.

5. Swirl Explosion

The gift explosion effect can be easily achieved by using the Brush Tool.

Let’s start drawing our swirly lines using your Pencil Tool or Pen Tool. Make sure you draw from one single direction, so that when you apply the art brush it will point in the same direction.

Then we create the brush by drawing a long triangle stripe shape. Open up your Brushes Palette and click New. Select New Art Brush when the option pops up.

Finally, we select all the swirly lines and apply the new art brush we have made. (If the lines are going in the opposite direction, you can double click your Brush in the Brushes palette and check Flip Along to swap the direction.) You notice that I have different widths for my swirly, you can do this by selecting each individual swirly and setting the line stroke to a smaller/bigger value.

After you are satisfied with what you have done. Go Object>Expand Appearance to expand the swirly. Open up your Gradient Palette and apply different gradients to your swirly to finish up the swirls. To hide the unwanted parts we can mask out the unwanted parts.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to use Illustrator CS Envelope Distort tool to make a trendy fashion ad.

1. Import a picture

Find a beautiful photo that you would like to use for your artwork. Place it in Illustrator by File > Place. Then lock the layer.

2. Base paths

Make a new layer, ‘base paths’. Use the Pen tool, cover the clothes with white paths.

3. Envelope text distortion

Copy all white paths from ‘base paths’ layer and paste it in a new layer. If you want, you can just duplicate the ‘base paths’ layer. Now use the Type tool to type in your text message and send it to back (note: your text must be sit below the shape). Then select the text object and the shirt path, go to Object > Envelope Distort > Make with Top Object or press Ctrl+Alt+C. This will distort the text with the selected shape.

Repeat this step to make the envelope text distortion for the skirt.

Skirt

For the skirt text objects, rotate it to 90 degree.

Don’t forget to use the short cut keys. It will save you a lot of time. Just select the shape and text, and press Ctrl+Alt+C.

Final

Now you can add some design elements in the background to spice up the artwork.

1. Create the flower paths

First create the paths of the flower with the Pen Tool.

2. Apply Gradient color

Select one of the petals, fill it with Radial Gradient (pick similar colors as shown) and select Multiply in Transparency pallate.

Select the un-filled petals, use the Eyedropper Tool, click on the gradient petal to copy the fill. You might need to adjust the gradient fill of each petal with the Gradient Tool.

3. Filament

Create a filament, fill it with Linear Gradient and select Multiply in Transparency pallete.

Then duplicate it.

4. Center

Use the Ellipse Tool, make a circle, fill it with Radial Gradient (as shown) and select Multiply in Transparency pallate.

Final

Duplicate the flower and lower the Opacity (Transparency).

What is Vector Graphics?

Vector graphics (also called geometric modeling or object-oriented graphics) is the use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and polygons, which are all based upon mathematical equations to represent images in computer graphics. Vector graphics formats are complementary to raster graphics, which is the representation of images as an array of pixels, as it is typically used for the representation of photographic images. There are times when working with vector tools and formats is best practice and times when working with raster tools and formats is best practice. There are times when both come together. An understanding of the advantages and limitations of each technology and the relationship between them is most likely to result in efficient and effective use of tools. Printing Vector art is key for printing. Since the art is made from a series of mathematical curves it will print very crisp even when resized. For instance one can take the same vector logo and print it on a business card, and then enlarge it to billboard size and keep the same crisp quality. A low-resolution raster graphic would blur incredibly if it were enlarged from business card size to billboard size.

3D modeling

In 3D computer graphics, vectorized surface representations are most common (bitmaps can be used for special purposes such as surface texturing, height-field data and bump mapping). At the low-end, simple meshes of polygons are used to represent geometric detail in applications where interactive frame rates or simplicity are important. At the high-end, where one is willing to trade-off higher rendering times for increased image quality and precision, smooth surface representations such as Bézier patches, NURBS or Subdivision surfaces are used. One can however achieve a smooth surface rendering from a polygonal mesh through the use of shading algorithms such as Phong and Gouraud.

Vector Graphic editors - Free and open source software

Inkscape: A vector graphics editor application released under the GNU General Public License. Its stated goal is to become a powerful graphic tool while being fully compliant with the XML, SVG and CSS standards. Has good multi-lingual support particularly for complex scripts.
Ipe: A vector graphics editor for creating figures in PDF or EPS format. Can process LaTeX source code and import PDF figures.

Karbon14 (formerly Kontour, which was formerly KIllustrator): Is a vector graphics editor, part of KOffice, the KDE office suite.

NodeBox: An application for programming 2D animation and graphics in Python. It runs on Mac OS X.

OpenOffice.org Draw: Currently OpenOffice.org supports exporting to SVG format officially, though with some limitations to be resolved. It also shares many features with Desktop publishing software.

Scribus: A desktop publishing application with SVG & PDF capabilities.

Skencil (formerly Sketch): A vector graphics editor implemented almost completely in Python. A fork of Skencil sK1 is oriented for prepress industry.

Sodipodi: A vector graphics editor intended for producing vector graphics, and be a drawing tool for artists. Development ceased in 2004, but Inkscape is based on Sodipodi.

Synfig: A 2D vector graphics and animation program intended to produce feature-film quality animation with fewer people and resources.
Tgif: A 2-D drawing tool under X11 for Unix and Unix-like platforms. Note: has several quirks due to being developed long before many features common in many editors were standard.

Xara Xtreme for Linux: A 2D vector graphics editor created by the British software company Xara.

Xfig: A 2-D drawing tool under X11 for Unix and Unix-like platforms. Xfig saves figures in its native Fig format, but they may be converted into various formats.

ZCubes: A 2D and 3D online vector drawing and painting tool. Primarily supports IE. Firefox supported for viewing using SVG in most platforms.
